A flat sheet is not stretched over the mattress but laid on it and tucked in underneath; this keeps the surface softer and shows the drape of the fabric. On a blue sateen flat sheet, this is exactly what brings the colour back: because no seam holds the surface in place, the fabric falls into folds across its whole width, and the blue gathers in them. On a bed that stays uncovered during the day, the flat sheet is where this very light shade shows the most colour \u2013 more than the taut fitted sheet, and in a more relaxed way than the duvet cover. The soft drape gives the folds a rounder shape; at every edge the sateen reflects light, while the hollows stay blue. In bright rooms this looks clear and cool; under warm evening light the shade becomes muted. It is slightly lighter and paler than the Azure Light Blue of our percale collection.<\/p>\n
Without elastic, a flat sheet has no sides sewn to a fixed depth \u2013 it is tucked under the mattress instead. The same size therefore fits mattresses of different depths, as long as there is enough fabric left to tuck in, and that is its real advantage over a fitted sheet.<\/p>\n
A flat sheet can also go on top: as a layer between skin and duvet or, on warm nights, in place of the duvet. This is how it is usually used in southern Europe \u2013 the 254x294 cm size corresponds there to the Italian lenzuolo matrimoniale for a double bed. The same smooth face as on the duvet cover lies against the skin, and as a top sheet it is changed more often than the duvet.<\/p>\n

In the trade, sateen made from this kind of cotton is usually sold as \u2018Mako satin\u2019; Mako is the Egyptian variety of the same species. The sateen has 320 threads per square inch (320 TC), weighs 120 g\/m\u00b2 and is woven in Northern Italy.
