Summer, all-season or winter?

The warmth level is the first decision, and it follows how warm you tend to sleep — not the calendar. Filling weights are comparable within the same collection, but not across different fillings: 400 grams of down and 400 grams of TENCEL™ Lyocell will not result in duvets with the same character.

What an all-season duvet is for. It has a medium filling weight and is made as a single duvet, rather than as two separate duvets that fasten together — a format often sold as a four-seasons duvet. Its advantage lies in simplicity: one duvet can be used throughout the year without the need to change between summer and winter versions, while bed linen and room temperature allow for a degree of fine-tuning. Those who experience summer and winter very differently may be better served by a separate summer duvet and winter duvet.

Unsure about the warmth level, filling or size?
Oliwia, our Atelier Concierge, will advise you personally. Request personal advice.

Filling, outer fabric and size

Once the warmth level has been chosen, filling, outer fabric and size shape the final decision. The filling defines the character of the duvet, the outer fabric influences how it feels against the skin, and the size determines how it fits the bed. For two people, there is a fourth consideration, which this section explores at the end.

The filling: six collections, six characters

Down is light and lofty: it traps air and combines warmth with very little weight. Royal is filled with Polish goose down, while Queen is filled with Siberian goose down. TENCEL™ Lyocell is a fibre made from cellulose; the washable Dreamy collection is designed with humid nights in mind. Wool retains warmth and can absorb moisture; it is aired rather than washed and professionally cleaned when required. Alpaca is filled with Peruvian alpaca wool, Merino with wool from Alpine merino sheep, and Cashmere with a blend of cashmere and merino wool.

Which filling is most suitable is a matter of character rather than value: washable or aired, exceptionally light or with more substance.

Outer fabric and weave: the finer adjustment

The feel of a duvet is not determined by the filling alone. Two textile layers shape the experience. The first is the outer fabric of the duvet itself: fine batiste made from Egyptian Mako cotton feels airy and dry against the skin; smooth cotton sateen lies closer to the body and feels more supple; a blend of Lyocell and cotton absorbs moisture.

The second layer is the bed linen placed over the duvet. Airy weaves such as percale and linen feel lighter during the warmer months; TENCEL™ bed linen can absorb moisture on humid nights; smooth sateen conveys a warmer character during the cooler months.

The same duvet can therefore feel noticeably different throughout the year. Its outer fabric and the bed linen provide a finer degree of adjustment alongside the fundamental choice of warmth level.

The size: length first, then width

Dimensions are stated as width × length, which means that 200x220 and 220x200 cm are two different sizes. Two basic principles help with the choice: the length should allow the duvet to reach from the shoulders to beyond the feet. The width determines how much room there is at the sides; anyone who moves frequently during the night may prefer a more generous size.

Our range begins at 135x200 cm and extends to 280x240 cm; we do not offer smaller sizes. Larger dimensions are not a secondary part of our range, but an area in which we have extensive experience. Duvets and matching duvet covers are available in the same sizes, and the cover should have the same dimensions as the duvet.

For reference, commonly used UK sizes include 135x200 cm for a single duvet, 200x200 cm for a double and 260x220 cm for a super king. King-size dimensions can vary between manufacturers; if the size you require is not included in our standard range, we can make it to order as a custom size.

One shared duvet or two separate duvets?

For two people sharing a bed, one shared duvet and two separate duvets are equally suitable choices. The decision depends less on preference than on two factors: the width of the bed and how similar each person’s preference for warmth is.

Duvet sizes for two

Your bed
One shared duvet
Two separate duvets

140–160 cm
200x200 or 200x220 cm — sufficient, but with little room to spare
135x200 or 140x200 cm each

180 cm
220x200 or 240 x220 cm
140x200 or 155x220 cm each

200 cm and wider
260x220, 260x240 or 280x240 cm
155x220 or 160x210 cm each

One shared duvet generally provides enough room at the sides at around 240 cm wide or more; below this, space can quickly become limited when one person turns during the night. It creates a calmer, more unified look: one continuous surface, one cover, one line. For a bedroom in which the bed is intended to form a quiet, cohesive focal point, this is often the more harmonious choice.

Two separate duvets are the more precise choice when each person has a different preference for warmth. Each can select their own warmth level and filling: a light Lyocell duvet beside a warm wool duvet is not a compromise, but a considered choice for each person. Separate duvets can also reduce disturbance when one person moves frequently during the night. Visually, the bed shows two distinct sections rather than one continuous surface; with matching covers, the overall composition remains cohesive.

When in doubt, warmth and comfort should take precedence over appearance. Two people with noticeably different preferences for warmth are unlikely to be equally comfortable beneath the same duvet.

Made to order in our own ateliers

We do not keep finished duvets in stock. Your order defines the collection, warmth level and size, and only then does the work begin: the outer fabric is cut to the chosen dimensions, the chambers are constructed, and the appropriate filling weight is added for that particular size.

This made-to-order process takes longer than selecting a duvet from stock, but it also means that every duvet — in every size within our standard range — is made specifically for the dimensions chosen. All our duvets are made to order in our own ateliers in Poland.

Custom dimensions beyond the standard range

Bespoke beds, antique bed frames and unusual room proportions do not always correspond to standard dimensions. Where technically feasible, we make duvets in custom sizes across every collection and warmth level. Let us know the dimensions you require, and we will confirm feasibility and the price before you place your order. Request a custom size.

Compare duvet and duvet cover sizes.
