Linen is the most elemental of our fibres — derived from the flax plant, woven in a plain weave, and distinguished by its matt, lively surface. It absorbs moisture, releases it again, and becomes softer with every wash: a material that is not finished when it arrives, but gradually becomes yours over the years. At VON SCHÜTZ, the linen is woven in Northern Italy from Western European flax. Each set is then made to order in our ateliers — in the standard sizes of our collection or made to your own dimensions.

What is linen?
Linen is the fibre obtained from flax, one of the oldest cultivated plants used for textiles. Its structure absorbs moisture and releases it again quickly, contributing to linen’s characteristically cool and dry feel.
Linen is usually woven in a plain weave, with warp and weft threads crossing one over one. This creates its distinctive matt, lively surface — not glossy, but quiet and naturally textured.
Linen is not the same as a linen-cotton blend. Such blends combine flax with cotton; our bedding is made from pure linen — 100% flax, without any cotton.

Linen or Cotton?
Linen and cotton are both natural fibres, but they differ in character. Linen reveals its origin: substantial and matt, with a visible structure and lively creases — a surface that continues to change. Our cotton fabrics appear smoother and more uniform.
Those seeking a calm, even surface will find it in our cotton fabrics; those drawn to a more elemental material and a tangible texture will find it in linen. Neither fibre is better — each has its own temperament.

Those who prefer the smoother character of cotton will find a matt surface in our percale bedding and a subtle lustre in our sateen bedding.
Linen in summer and throughout the year
Linen absorbs moisture and releases it again. Combined with its characteristically dry feel, this can make the fabric feel pleasantly cool, particularly in summer.
Whether it feels warm or cool, however, also depends on the duvet, the room temperature, and your individual sense of warmth.
In its natural state: texture, creases, and softness
Linen creases — this is not a flaw, but part of its nature. The substantial fibre settles into soft folds rather than lying completely flat; those seeking a perfectly smooth surface may find cotton more suitable.
Our linen is left in its natural state: not pre-washed and not stonewashed. The term describes only the finishing of the fabric — not its colour and not how the flax is grown. It becomes softer at home, not at the mill — a little more with every wash and through continued use.
Those who prefer a softer, pre-washed surface from the outset may request stonewashed linen through our atelier.
From the Atelier
Every set is made only after your order is placed. It is cut and sewn in our ateliers in Germany and Poland, while the fabric is woven for us in Northern Italy.
The flax is grown in Belgium and France, keeping the textile journey within Europe from fibre to finished seam. The supply chain is European Flax certified, and the bedding fabrics used are certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100.
The bedding is finished with an envelope-style hotel closure, without a zip or buttons. Every set leaves the atelier without plastic packaging, presented in a reusable fabric bag.

The dimensions of your duvet and pillows are what matter, not the size of the bed. Alongside our standard sizes, we make linen bedding in any technically feasible dimensions.

The texture and feel of linen are best understood by touch. For a sample fee credited in full towards a subsequent order, you can assess the fabric before making your decision — alongside percale and sateen in the sample set. Request the fabric sample set.
Care: wash at up to 60°C
Linen bedding should be washed inside out at up to 60°C. It may be tumble-dried at a low temperature and ironed at up to 150°C.
Those who appreciate its lively texture may leave it unironed. When in doubt, follow the sewn-in care label.

New linen initially feels firmer. Our linen is not stonewashed; with washing and use, it gradually becomes softer.
Those who prefer a softer surface from the outset may request stonewashed linen through our atelier.
How should linen bedding be cared for?
Wash linen bedding inside out at up to 60°C. Tumble dry at a low temperature.
It may be ironed at up to 150°C, although ironing is not necessary. When in doubt, follow the care label on the product.
Which sizes and custom dimensions are available?
Our standard sizes range from 135×200 cm to 280×240 cm, along with the standard sizes for pillowcases, fitted sheets, and flat sheets.
In addition, we make linen bedding in any technically feasible dimensions, such as 285×280 cm. Send the desired width and length to our atelier, and we will confirm the price before you place your order.
What is a hotel closure?
A hotel closure is an internal fabric flap on the duvet cover that keeps the duvet securely in place without a zip or buttons. We deliberately use this type of closure for our linen bedding.
