Sateen Bedding

Sateen refers to a weave, not a fibre. In a sateen weave, the threads pass over several others, creating a smooth surface with a subtle lustre and a soft, fluid drape. At VON SCHÜTZ, our cotton sateen is woven in Northern Italy from American Pima cotton. Each set is made to order in our ateliers, in the standard sizes of our collection or made to your own dimensions.

What is sateen?

Sateen refers to the weave of a fabric, not to the fibre. In a sateen weave, the weft thread passes over several warp threads before being interlaced again. These longer thread floats create a smooth surface and allow light to glide across it, producing a subtle lustre on the face of the fabric while the reverse remains matt.

The lustre describes the surface, not the material. A silky sheen does not mean that the fabric contains silk; the fibre used is independent of the weave.

Our cotton sateen is woven from combed, long-staple cotton. The fine, even yarn creates a dense, uniform surface.

Cotton Sateen and Mako Sateen

Cotton sateen is a cotton fabric woven in a sateen weave. Cotton sateen made from long-staple cotton is often referred to commercially as Mako sateen.

As the term alone reveals little about the fibre’s origin and processing, we name the fibre explicitly: long-staple American Pima cotton.

Sateen or Percale?

Sateen and percale differ in their weave — and therefore in their appearance and feel. In sateen, the threads float over several interlacing points, creating a finely lustrous surface and a soft, fluid drape. In percale, the warp and weft threads cross one over one; the fabric remains matt and feels drier and crisper.
Neither quality is better — they simply have different characters.

Black, Taupe Greige, and Marble White

The subtle lustre of sateen takes on a different character in each of the three colours. In Black, the interplay between light and surface is most pronounced. Taupe Greige combines the warmth of beige with the calm of a muted grey. Marble White is a restrained, solid shade of white.

From the Atelier

Every set is made only after your order is placed. It is cut and sewn in our ateliers in Germany and Poland, while the fabric is woven for us in Northern Italy.

The weaving mill is a certified member of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, and all fabrics in our current bedding collection are certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100.

Every set leaves the atelier without plastic, packed in a reusable fabric bag.

Sateen Bedding made in Your Size

Made in your size. Even 285×280 cm.

The dimensions of your duvet and pillows are what matter, not the size of the bed. Alongside the standard sizes in our collection, we make bedding in any technically feasible dimensions.

Send us the width and length in centimetres. Oliwia, our Atelier Concierge, will reply personally by email or WhatsApp and confirm the price before you order. An overview of our standard dimensions is available in the bedding size guide.

A set comprising one duvet cover and one pillowcase starts at €120.

A fabric is best understood by touch. You may order a sample before making your decision; the sample fee will be credited in full towards your purchase. Request a fabric sample.

Care: Wash at up to 40°C

Sateen bedding should be washed inside out at up to 40°C with the zip closed. It may be tumble-dried on a low setting and ironed inside out at up to 150°C.

When in doubt, follow the sewn-in care label.
