Fitted sheet or flat sheet?

Fitted sheets have an elasticated edge sewn around the entire sheet, holding the fabric securely beneath the mattress. Their width, length and depth must match the complete mattress set-up — which is why depth is central to the guide below.

Flat sheets are the simplest form of sheet: a classic, plain rectangle. Used as a bottom sheet, they are tucked firmly around the mattress with hospital corners; used as a top sheet, they lie lightly over the body. As the fabric is not stretched around the mattress, the deciding factor is not depth but the available overhang.

Which sheet suits your mattress?

With a fitted sheet, the mattress alone is not the deciding factor; the complete mattress set-up must be considered — the core, any additional layer and the topper together. This total depth is the measurement most often overlooked when choosing a fitted sheet. A sheet may have the correct width and length yet still fail to fit properly if the mattress set-up is too deep or too shallow.

Depth is decisive

Our fitted sheets are made for complete mattress set-ups measuring 18 to 30 cm in depth, including the topper. When in doubt, measure the complete set-up rather than the mattress core alone. Flat sheets are more forgiving, as they are not stretched around the mattress; our generously cut sizes are suitable for mattresses up to approximately 27 cm deep.

Standard mattress

A standard mattress core measuring 18 to 24 cm in depth fits comfortably within our standard range, even with a thin additional layer on top. In this case, only the basic size needs to be considered — for example 90×200, 140×200 or 180×200 cm.

Box-spring bed and topper

For a box-spring bed, the relevant measurement is the upper mattress together with the topper, not the bed frame or base beneath it. Measure the complete mattress set-up. If the combined depth exceeds 30 cm, it falls outside our standard range and we make the fitted sheet to your measurements. Please provide the depth together with the width and length. The same applies to split mattresses, where two mattress cores sit beneath one shared topper.

Shallow mattresses and mattress set-ups

For mattress set-ups below 18 cm in depth, a standard fitted sheet may sit too loosely, form creases and slip. Folding mattresses, guest mattresses, thin mattress pads and daybeds often fall within this range. We therefore also make fitted sheets to measure, with sides tailored to the required depth.

Custom sizes and shapes

Not every bed follows a standard rectangular format. We make fitted and flat sheets for caravans and motorhomes, yacht berths, antique beds with individual proportions and mattresses in custom shapes — including angled or rounded designs and shapes made to fit beneath a sloping roof. Cot and children’s sizes are also available on request, although they are not part of our standard range.

Provided the requested size or shape is technically feasible, we will make the sheet to your measurements. Send us the dimensions and shape, preferably together with a sketch, and we will confirm the price before you place your order. Request a custom size.

A sheet to match your bed linen

Each of our collections is made as a complete ensemble: duvet cover, pillowcase, fitted sheet and flat sheet — in every fabric and colour of the respective collection. Bed linen in sage green percale can therefore be paired with a fitted sheet in precisely the same fabric and colour; those who prefer linen can choose the corresponding sheet in linen. For us, this is not an exception but our standard.

The bed is not merely covered, but composed as a whole — with the same feel, drape and care from the duvet cover to the sheet beneath it.
